Champions Crowned At ASA Hall of Fame Stadium 9/29/2007
OKLAHOMA CITY---Seven teams from across the country walked away with the title of best of the best and bragging rights for the next 12 months after capturing their respective classification this weekend at the ASA Hall of Fame Complex. Five teams captured titles in the Hooters Championship Series while national championships were awarded in Men’s Class A Slow Pitch and Women’s Open Slow Pitch.
Long Haul Trucking/Miken, of Durand, Wis., battled out of the loser’s bracket to win the ASA Men’s Class A Slow Pitch National Championship. Long Haul was sent to the loser’s bracket after falling to defending national champion Cheney’s Pytche Blakk/Execute Sports/Easton, of San Diego, Calif., 25-11. But two games later, Long Haul and Chaney’s found themselves in a rematch of last year’s title game. Long Haul forced the championship into the “if” game after posting a 27-20 victory. In the winner-take-all final game, the bats of Long Haul were scorching and blazed past Chaney’s 33-5 to redeem themselves from a year ago. Long Haul’s Greg Flees, of Steven’s Point, Wis., was named the tournament MVP after batting .741 with 26 RBI on 7 HR. He was also named as the batting champion, while Chaney’s Brett Helmer won the home run title with nine.
Bertie’s/B&C/Hub City Glass/Miken, from Elizabethtown, Ky., won a five-game thriller against C-Town/American Funding/Red Rock/DSSBats/Easton, of Boise, Idaho, for the ASA Men’s Class B Slow Pitch Hooters Championship Series. C-Town and Bertie’s entered play Friday tied 1-1. Bertie’s won game three 26-19, but C-Town rebounded with a 27-18 in game four. In a winner-take-all final game, Chris Lane, of Columbus, Ind., drove in six runs to lead Bertie’s to a 22-11 victory. Chad Daniels, of Murfressboro, Tenn., was named the tournament MVP after batting .789 with nine RBI and nine runs scored.
Team Logo of Commerce, Ga., was the only team that was able to complete the sweep on Saturday when they knocked off Hara’s/Casa Group/Worth of Salem, Ore., 17-12 in game three of ASA Men’s Class C Slow Pitch Hooters Championship Series. Hara’s never could muster enough runs against Team Logo’s pitchers, falling in the final game 17-12. Team Logo’s Phillip White, from Columbus, Ga. was named the tournament MVP. He finished the series with a .545 batting average, nine RBI, two home runs and six runs scored.
White’s Lawn Care/Riverdogs, of Wake Forest, N.C., went undefeated to capture the ASA Men’s Class D Slow Pitch Hooters Championship Series. After finishing round-robin play with a perfect 4-0 record, the Riverdogs went 2-0 in single elimination tournament play to earn the title. They started the day off by beating Storm/Bosch Financialof Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 21-12, before capturing the championship with a 12-9 win over Lugo’s Heavy Hitters/Mar Designs & Construction, of Mission, Texas. The Riverdogs’ Jon Moore, of Selma, N.C., earned the tournament’s MVP by hitting .714 with 14 RBI.
The 2007 ASA Women’s Open Slow Pitch National Championship had a patriotic feel as the red, white and blue of the All Armed Forces team captured the championship. After Juice of Houston, Texas, forced the if necessary game by beating the Armed Forces 19-2 in the first championship game, the Armed Force rebounded in the final “if” game to win 13-7. Shannika Taylor of Fort Huachuca, Ariz., was named the tournament MVP for Armed Forces.
Fraley’s Wildcats, from Lexington, Ky., entered Saturday only needing one win in three games against WTS Softball Crew of Lancaster, Calif., to capture the ASA Women’s Class C Slow Pitch National Championship. After losing the first game 14-2, Fraley’s got the necessary win in game four winning 11-3. Gina Dennis, of Lawrenceburg, Ky., was named the tournament MVP for the Wildcats. Dennis hit .583, with a home run and five RBI.
The Lady Blue Jays of San Antonio, Texas entered Saturday in danger of being swept out of ASA Women’s Class D Slow Pitch Hooters Championship Series by Paver Pro Unlimited of Fort Myers, Fla. But the Lady Blue Jays fought off three elimination games by winning 6-5, 18-6, and 6-3 to capture the title. The Lady Blue Jays’ Tania Gutierrez, of San Antonio, was named the tournament MVP by batting .588 with seven RBI and five runs scored.
